Scavenger

Space Shooter with Clever Increase in Challenge

Where Scavenger excels is in its difficulty system, and its level of polish. The controls are very smooth--everything is controlled with the mouse, and the levels introduce new features and problems gradually. Scavenger's difficulty system is particularly clever: rather than simply making enemies more numerous or powerful, each difficulty level ads some new feature to complicate your life. For example, at the second level, there's gravity, constantly dragging you down to the bottom of the screen, so you must be firing your jets periodically to prevent contact with lower walls (any wall contact damages your shields); at the next, you have a limited amount of fuel for each level, and have to husband it carefully. This considerably increases the game's replay value--playing it on a higher difficulty level presents new challenges, not just more stuff.

The gameplay here you've probably seen before: you control a single spaceship, moving through corridors (you've encountered a massive space hulk and are salvaging stuff from it). Each level requires you to find a number of power orbs and take them to the level exit; along the way, you pick up jewels for extra points, and encounter gun emplacements and aliens who make your life difficult.

The developer says:

One human, one droid and a Scavenger class space ship. Enter the Star Hulk Icarus on one last mission: to locate and capture the Energy Source. It was to be a simple job, but nobody mentioned the alien mass spreading across the massive vessel's interior.

Test your piloting skills as you overcome the Icarus's decaying gravity fields. Rotate, thrust and shoot your way through 80 sectors, collecting riches, battling aliens and unlocking the way to freedom.

Scavenger blends action based gameplay with carefully designed, challenging levels to create a shoot'em'up experience like no other.

Reviews

"Scavenger is one of those games that you can tell as soon as you start the first level is going to be great. It’s the kind of game that really shows what indie gaming can produce. Indie, if you haven’t noticed, does NOT mean amateur and Scavenger really showcases this."
