FastCrawl

Game Tunnel's 2006 RPG of the Year

FastCrawl is what the name suggests: a quick-playing dungeon crawler, perfect for a way to kill your lunch hour. One of the parameters you set at game-start, in fact, is whether you want a short, medium, or long game; short ones last about 30 minutes, while long ones last perhaps an hour.

The gameplay is Rogue-like, except that this is, of course, a game with an intuitive 2D interface with decent graphics, playable almost entirely with a mouse--almost like a NetHack designed for the casual game crowd. Dungeons, opponents, and items are randomly generated each time; each turn consumes a unit of supply, and while you can find more in the dungeon, the net effect is to limit the length of gameplay. And unlike most Rogue-likes, you control a party of characters instead of a single one. All in all, a nice, fast-playing hack'n'slash experience.

The Developer Says:

Have a fantasy adventure in thirty minutes!

FastCrawl is a quick and highly replayable fantasy role-playing game. You control a party of heroes exploring a dungeon on an epic quest. To succeed you must engage in exciting combat against many foes, find powerful items to help you on your quest, avoid fiendish traps, save another champion or two, specialize your characters' abilities as they level, and carefully explore your surroundings... all in as little as thirty minutes.

Every time you play FastCrawl you will have a new game experience as you explore a different dungeon, lead a different party of heroes, face different monsters, and find different treasure. An intelligent game generation system will make sure that no two games are the same.

Play at the level of difficulty and duration of game that you wish; enjoy a leisurely thirty minute break in the game's pleasant environments, or face insurmountable odds in an hour of nail-biting dungeon crawling action. The game is entirely turn based, so it can easily be played in the background and fits perfectly into your day.

Features

  • Thousands of randomly generated dungeons to explore and purge
  • A diverse bestiary of monsters to defeat.
  • Hundreds of items to unearth and use in your quest
  • Play a full game in as little as 30 minutes

Reviews

"I really look forward to playing this one again and again. I found myself firing it up at work, because it could be played in a very short time during break or lunch. And, maybe sometimes while the boss wasn't looking. Get this one. You will not be disappointed."

"If you're looking for a casual RPG to spend some time with, then look no further. The gameplay is very easy to catch on to and it offers endless replay potential in order to keep you busy."

"Though sometimes it isn't quite perfect, the quick adventures of random arrangement make for a perfect combination of adventuring and role-playing that kept us playing for many, many hours hours. Perhaps the one big paradox of the game is that despite its quick games, we didn't play it any fewer hours than the longer RPGs we tried out this year. In fact, many of us here played it more."

I like RPG's that do not take forevernot

WOW is not the one for me, I also tried on called usa tatics, which was pretty good, but they all take too long, and I do not have much time, but this is Perfect! Love it, it is great for the busy guy.

Great roguelike rpg game

I tried fastcrawl demo after playing adom and nethack (and bought the full version after). I have to say that the game is quite amazing and i totally agree with game tunnel rpg game of the year award. It's as good as most free roguelike games on dmoz web directory and the rpg games archive, but with the depth and content of a commercial game. We can see how much time was put in it's development and i recommend it for all rpg games lovers. The games are quick and it will fit for both casual and hardcore gamers.

FastCrawl is a cool idea, and it delivers. If you're looking for short gameplay experiences or the dungeon crawling style appeals to you, then check it out. I've already sunk MANY hours into it, and even still occasionally pull it up for some quick fun.

If there were to be a FastCrawl 2, I'd try to steal some inspiration from Strange Adventures in Infinite Space. Some comparisons are apples-to-oranges (a SAIS game is much shorter than a long FastCrawl game, so FastCrawl could use a bit less randomness), but the rare cool events and wider range of final scores are just two areas that could improve FastCrawl.

Pawley has the basic mechanic down pat, and that's why you should check FastCrawl out. However there's still room to spice things up and get players excited, which could take this from a very good game to a great one.
