Shadowgrounds

System Shock Meets Alien

Just a few years ago, you would not have been surprised to see a game like this getting cover treatment from the major PC game magazines. It's a nicely polished oblique-overhead third-person shooter set in a mining colony on Ganymede (one of Jupiter's moons) that is under attack by alien critters. The story line is nicely done too, with good voice acting and a real sense of tension and a colony under siege; naturally, weapons get more powerful over time, and NPCs work with you in later levels.

Warren Spector says one of the problems with the industry is that we have the equivalent of Hollywood blockbusters and the equivalent of student films, with nothing in between; while that may be largely true, Shadowgrounds is an exception. Given the quality of the graphics and the level of polish here, this is no low-budget indie title, but something that could probably be released at retail--except of course that there's little appetite at retail any more for PC-only games. Which is a pity, because this is an excellent title; we hope Meridian can succeed in getting some review attention for it, because it deserves the exposure.

The Developer Says
OLD SCHOOL ACTION STRIKES BACK!

Shadowgrounds is an epic sci-fi game that blends addictive old school gameplay and modern technology into one big, nasty alien-battling carnage festival. The game is played from a top-down perspective that gives gamers a better view of the battlefield and allows tactical use of weapons - new tactics become useful as their arsenal is upgraded to even more destructive weapons.

UPGRADE THOSE WEAPONS!
Use a devastating arsenal of high-tech weaponry to dispose of the alien threat. Each weapon has multiple upgrades that maximize the carnage. Unleash the flames of the Flamethrower's Fuel Trap, cause mayhem with the Grenade Launcher's Poison Grenades, slash and dice the monsters with the Laser Rifle's Pinpoint Laser - and many more!

WHAT LURKS IN THE SHADOWS!
Shadowgrounds uses cutting-edge realistic lighting and glow technology to light up the battlefield and create detailed shadows producing an atmosphere of fear. But the lighting and the flashlight also affect some aliens' behavior – take advantage of that and you can turn the tide in the game of fear by using your flashlight effectively.

DESTRUCTIBLE EVIRONMENT!
What good are weapons and special effects if you can't wreak havoc on the environment? Shadowgrounds lets you go all-out - glass shatters, ground shakes, trees fall, barrels explode and furniture blows to smithereens. You can use the environment to your advantage.

THEY'RE BIG AND NASTY!
Big, brutal monsters await you. Prepare to face many different bosses who will do anything to stop your journey. They’re nasty, blood-thirsty beasts, but don’t give in to fear - remember to use the environment and the lighting to your advantage!

not worthy of being compared to system shock

I tried the demo and was blasted away by the intro. I was pumped to play and must say I was a little dissapointed.
This is a decent game, decent gameplay and compelling atmosphere with good tricks of the light. So where does it go wrong?

Well, since this was compared to system shock, the sound is where it goes wrong. It took some time to get the sound levels right and initially it gave me some problem with my speakers. This is not really a problem and I wouldn't have mentioned it, if I didn't have recurring problems of gunshots sometimes triggering a sort of static sounding effect from my speakers.

That besides the point, the voice acting is horrible and this hurts double because it hurts the best thing this game had going, a fantastic atmosphere.
Couple this up with the characterless characters and uninspiring writing and the game is only so-so.

But still a decent game if you haven't been playing games for a long time yet and easy enough to grasp for new players as well.

Shiny, Offbeat Breath of Fresh Air

Shadowgrounds is quite well produced. The sound and graphics make a nice atmosphere (nice, as in "I wouldn't want to live there"). However, it isn't nearly as scary as it wants to be. Not an issue really, as it is just as much fun without it. It's different from some other top-down shooters in that the action is a bit more sporadic. You cannot save during a level, but I found them to by nice-sized chunks, so it never became a problem. If you die, you get 5 respawns. I've never had to use more then three in a level.

The only negative I had with it was it's story, or bloody mess thereof. It took me half to game to realize that it's only a carrier for the linear progression of levels, and should be ignored. Even so, I still skip every cut scene and try not to listen when the characters start talking. I hate the badly stereotyped characters with bad voice acting almost with passion. The music tries to play it up to be some emotional tearfest at times, which doesn't help anything.

That said, I did play through it twice within two weeks of getting it, it loved it so much. I can't say if it was a short game or not, as I played it so much, it might just have been me. I'd love to give co-op a shot. The level editor is also tantalizing. I'd love to make a arena-like level and see how long I can last. There is also a fan-made mod that adds a whole new campaign in the works, so that should add to your shadowgrounding goodness.

In short, ignore the plot, embrace everything else. If you love action and are tired of yet-another-FPS, try this. It's worth your money.

Great Game

This is a really fun game for those who like lots of action. Its a real challenge and the graphics and sound are very well done. Think Doom from a top down perspective and with modern graphics. I've finished the game and my only complaint is its a bit short. Please get that sequel out! I gave it a 9 because the graphics on rare occasion do stutter with too many monsters on screen and the lack of a save game feature inside a level (games are only saved between levels, you get 5 tries per level before having to restart).

Wonderful game

This is the first Manifesto game that I've downloaded where I knew I was buying it 10 minutes in. The atmosphere, lighting, and gameplay are all great. You always know what you're supposed to be doing so the pace is right, but the levels still have fun design to them. I'm really enjoying this so far.

I know that I'll get blasted for saying this, but flaws aside, the gameplay in Shadowgrounds in better then that of Alien Shooter. The ability to dodge coupled with the more difficult damage model adds the tension of a shmup. The only thing that I think Shadowgrounds could really use is a survival mode. Thankfully, there is a growing mod community around it, so that could happen soon.

If you think about it, these top-down shooters are really shmups with deeper gameplay and different theming.
