| Fun Times Massive Assault is very enjoyable. There is a noticeable lack of "randomness" seen in many other turn based games, but I quickly found that lead to more focus on strategy. One really nice feature is that you can adjust the difficulty per map, so if you are finding it easy, then you can bump the AI to medium or hard. The AI will improve and will have more resources. Speaking of resources, I really like the simple way resource gathering is handled. Plus, there is a wide selection of vehicles and weapons, and it is fun spending resources on the appropriate ones for your play-style. Do you take the stationary heavy-hitter, the swarm of small scramblers, or a fast dart to perform a flanking move? Massive Assault gives you all those options. The graphics on the game were very good. Maps are made even more impressive with appropriate effects, yet I was able to turn up all the settings and resolution without slowing down my rather poor rig. Sound is not bad, either. I have to mention one weird bug. Every third map or so, I end up playing the wrong side. Very strange. Exiting to the main menu and re-entering the scenario fixes it. Overall, this strategy game gives you lots of control over your movements. You never feel rushed, and you can even rewind movements made during your turn. There is an emphasis on strategy, and that is such a big change compared to so many other PC games. I am not typically a fan of strategy games, but I found it easy to like this one, perhaps due to the futuristic feel. I'd really recommend the game to everyone - it's easy to pick up and start playing, and like chess, you'll spend a lot more time learning strategies than the rules. |
