Question about the game

I'm trying out the demo and one thing is buggin me about the game.
Each time I start a new wave, it seems that I start with the same basic shot that I start the game with. Am I correct with assumption?

The only weapon you will keep in the next wave is the triple shot power-up, laser shots are activated by collecting more than half of the golden ships on each level.

I don't think the play manual is included in the demo download, i'll find out what's going on with this.
