Gun Metal

Be a Giant Transforming Battle Robot

Let your inner twelve-year old say "Cool!".

Gun Metal is a level-based third-person shooter in which you control a mech--a giant battle bot--that can also transform into a jet aircraft. In a series of levels, you battle enemy tanks, hovertanks, aircraft, artillery, and so on, generally with some ground support from friendly troops. Kind of mindless fun, and maybe not the most creative game ever published, but hey, at ten bucks, it's a pretty good deal.

The Developer Says

Spurred on by countless conquests, the enemy moves forward, threatening the very heart of your civilization. One single hope remains: a prototype combat vehicle known as The Havoc Suit. Standing over 30 feet tall, equipped with an arsenal of devastating weaponry, and capable of transforming into a highly maneuverable jet fighter, only this formidable battle machine has the potential to halt the invading foe.

Features

  • Freely transform between a mech and a jet at the push of a button
  • Customize your arsenal, and outfit yourself with an extensive armory of devastating weaponry
  • Engage in explosive battles on next-generation battlefields
  • Fight hordes of enemies through 14 challenging missions, and assist your allied forces as they take their last stand
  • Leave your mark on the world as the persistent damage system records every last detail of destruction

CREATING HAVOC

In GunMetal War Transformed, players suit up in the one and only Havoc suit, a power-armored vehicle that as “jet” or “robot” can fire tomahawk missiles from one or torpedoes from the other.

Fans of anime like Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Macross Plus, and Full Metal Panic won’t need an explanation for GunMetal: War Transformed, the PC version of a popular video game that will quickly remind non-fans of the old Transformers cartoon series or the anime-light Robotech series. The graphics are bright and colorful as you would expect in a “cartoon,” but there is nothing cartoon-like about the action and the explosions. The 14 missions are designed to be roughly equivalent to the MechWarrior games, but as should be noted right from the beginning, this is not a “simulation” in the sense of MechWarrior or Heavy Gear with “realistic” physics, damage, and flight model. GunMetal doesn’t bog down your enjoyment with “realistic” systems. It is a video game design and follows those conventions more than traditional PC considerations.

Arcade action with polish

If you want a little crunchy arcade action without leaving your modern sensibilities behind, look no further. Gunmetals graphics are stunning, and make good use of Dx9.0. The action is always intense, never letting up until Game Over. The controls can be a little clunky, but only take some getting used to. The missions are all unique and each introduce more gameplay mechanics. Jumping from the ground to the air with a completly different set of weapons insures that gunmetal doesn't get old, you just find more ways to play. You can go back and replay any mission, which is a big plus, considering how fun they are. It also works nice with a controller, if that floats your boat.

At $20, this was a steal. At $10, this is a downright must buy.

Excellent

My inner twelve-year old loved it. If you were deceived to see that the latest Transformers game did not feature air-robots, you will love it too. A lot of weapons here - almost too many -, and though 14 missions could seem light, you will find that it's just enough : all of them are quite clever and never redundant. Difficulty is perfect as well : quite easy at start, if you don't go reckless; then incrementaly harder, but not to the point that it's out of your reach.

Not many games give as much quality for only 10$. Whether you're a fan of robots, air fights or just good action, I recommend it :)

Gunmetal's lead programmer and lead artist went on to form moonpod.com and released the PC downloadable game Starscape (the demo of which is also on manifesto here ).
