It feels like there's lots of story, very atmospheric, but the demo was way too frustrating to convince me to buy.
SPOILERY
You can't save, in a combat-heavy game. Probably it reveals my non-console roots, but this is unacceptable to me. I restarted four times (three deaths, one geometry bug) trying to get to the nominal end of the first mission. There, an hour into play (although it could be done faster), while in the middle of a fight with the apparent guardians of my goal, while I still haven't had an opportunity to save, I apparently stumbled through a portal to the *next* mission, which I was still hopelessly outclassed in (boss mob with 3x my life constantly summoning armored enemies). And died. If I'd been able to save I could think of a couple of alternate tactics to try, but falling out of one combat into the next didn't give me much chance to scope out the enemies or plan for them.
There is no in-game help, no tutorial aside from (1) how to skip past conversations and (2) how to load new data files into your personal computer. Have I been spoiled by MMOs? The first death is because it wasn't apparent to me that my character wasn't wearing his armor, because the character inventory screen is unlabeled, nearly untooltipped, and generally unrevealing. Second death was because I hadn't picked up the heavy-armor-piercing missile launcher, and the third death was because even if you have a dozen doses of regen drug that heavy weapon still isn't enough to take down the 'mech between you and your goal.
