2D Platformer with the Attitude of Doom
In Glow, you play a badass guy with a sword invading the depths of Hell, apparently because your equally badass wife is so badass that Satan has taken a fancy to, and abducted, her. As you might expect in a platformer, there are secret areas, carefully timed leaps, puzzles, and so on, but as you might expect from the theme, there's also quite a lot of frenetic combat with the minions of Hell--not just with the sword, but a pistol and a slew of magic spells (which you pick up over time) as well. As a result, the feeling is more like that of Doom, or Crimsonland than, say, Super Mario Brothers.
An interesting juxtaposition, in fact.
The developer says:
Glow is a classic 2D platform game full of exciting and challenging levels. The unique blend of action, puzzles, skill and the magic of the underworld revives one of the oldest genres in the history of computer games and testifies that 2D platform games are anything but obsolete.
Story
New Age City is raging with crime. Rival gangs fight one another amongst drugs, gambling and prostitution. The legal authorities are out of their depth and have been bribed, too. In all this mayhem Stevie Speed and Carmen Cobra used to go their own way. The pair's raids became legendary and even the biggest mafia bosses feared for their lives or at least feared to lose their influence and power.
Whoever stands out in such spectacular fashion amidst all these criminal elements, in this breeding ground of evil, gets noticed even outside of New Age City. The pair's reputation extended as far as Heaven and Hell. And that's how it came about that Satan himself developed a liking for Carmen Cobra. He abducted her from the world of the living so as not having to wait for someone else to send her to the netherworld by dispatching her. However, Carmen is madly in love with Stevie and has no intention of putting up with being a prisoner. Chained up in Hell, she is waiting for her boyfriend Stevie to rescue her.
With the aid of a voodoo priest Stevie is teleported to Hell's gate and from there he will be fighting his way to his lover. Along the way he discovers the possibilities of paranormal powers and spells, which will be useful on his journey to Satan.
