PanicBCN

Cheerful Platformer

If you have a yen for a clever, smooth-playing arcade-style platformer with levels that require some puzzle-solving as well as reflex action to complete, PanicBCN may be just the ticket.

You play a girl with a mallet, which you can use to stun and smash opponents through more than 100 levels of frenetic arcade action.

Pax Galaxia

Empire Lite in Space

Dio Games calls Pax Galaxia "Risk-like," but actually it's more similar to Empire--albeit Pax is simpler and faster-moving.

Plasmaworm

Now Released for Free by Digital Eel

The best way to describe Plasmaworm is: Snake on acid.

You remember Snake, right? If you're as old as some of us at Manifesto (pardon us while we look for the bedpan), you probably remember it as a little game that's been implemented for everything from the TRS-80 on up... and if you're actually young and probably way hipper than we are, you played it, and probably still do, on your Nokia mobile phone. Little worm crawls around a screen, you hit the arrow keys or directional keypad to change the direction in which it moves, it gets longer over time, and if you run into yourself or a wall, game over.

Professor Fizzwizzle and the Molten Mystery

Puzzle Platformer Ranging from the Fair to the Fiendish

A sequel to the acclaimed Professor Fizzwizzle (a 2006 IGF finalist), Professor Fizzwizzle and the Molten Mystery is a polished puzzler in which you must maneuver crates, barrels, magnets and other objects to get from each level's starting point to its exit. Each object has different characteristics, and you need to think clearly about how to succeed. Luckily, there are nice features to prevent this from becoming an exercise in frustration: "u" undoes your last move, "r" restarts the level, and you can always ask to see a run-through of the current level if you're stumped.

The new game adds a variety of power-ups and other features (heat and ice guns, bat bots, etc.) to allow somewhat more complex puzzles than the original game. Indeed, it contains three different sets of levels--a simple path, a normal one, and an extremely difficult set as well.

Definitely a game that puzzle fans will enjoy.

Project Xenoclone

by Alten8

An oblique-overhead third-person shooter set in a science complex overrun by genetically engineered baddies, Project Xenocone is fast-paced, challenging, and tense enough to satisfy fans of horror shooters. Maybe a little too challenging, in fact, given the lack of saves except between levels.

One unusual feature: the monsters are apparently immune to regular bullets, but luckily you quickly acquire a special gun that can harm them. However, half can only be killed with red energy, and the other half with blue; you fire one with the left mouse button, and the other with the right, and can run out of one kind of ammo before the other. This adds another edge-of-the-seat aspect to the game, particularly given the low light levels prevailing in the overrun complex.

Pursuit of Power

The developer says:

Pursuit of Power is a real-time strategy game based in a fantasy setting. The game takes place during a time when powerful leaders use ancient magic to travel across the universe and add worlds to their empire. In Pursuit of Power, you assume the role of the leader. Your main goal is to destroy all enemy portals and troops. Use your leader to blast enemy units with a comet, destroy a group of soldiers with a vortex, and heal loyal troops. Summon buildings and troops from your home world to dominate the universe.

Puzzle Pirates

Yohoho! has unique, fun gameplay based on a combination of persistent MUD-style online games and fun puzzle games! While you can explore and interact with your character, when you accept a challenge, you launch a themed Puzzle game. For example, if you accept a Pirate's challenge to a swordfight, you'll both pop up the Swordfighting puzzle and go head to head! When your opponent clears blocks to strike a blow, pieces rain down on your board!
