Crimsonland

I Long for Combat

...as one of the units in Starcraft says. If you long for combat, you'd be hard put to find a better game than Crimsonland, which is a pure, fast, intense third-person gorefest. Story? Pah! Who needs story when there are things to shoot, with a wide variety of high-powered weapons and 50 levels to conquer. Shoot, grab the powerups, retreat when necessary, and shoot some more.

The gameplay may be of a type, but there's a lot of variety here. The monsters have individual behaviors (and the best tactics to deal with them vary with their behavior), each weapon has its own characteristics (and there are a lot of them), there are many different power-ups, and three gameplay modes. In short, if you like this style of game, Crimsonland will keep you occupied for quite some time.

The Developer Says:

Thousands of aliens, giant spiders, mutant lizards, and more are on the attack - can you survive the onslaught? You will consistently unlock new and better perks that improve your ability to use a devastating arsenal. Crimsonland features 3 modes of play, Internet high score posting, and endless hours of pressure packed fun.

Perks

Perks always have a soft spot in my heart, theres nothing like periodic, ad-hoc bonuses to make feel rewarded in a way that HP and damage scaling, in their predictable way, can't. My only complaint with this game is that all the advancement is modular to the individual levels, and that some sort of macro-scale progression model would make it much deeper and engaging without much added cost to art assets.

Fantastic game

Not since a mummy and a tomb raider collided one faithful day, mixing chocolate and peanut butter, has an unlikely fusion produced such spectacular results. Crimsonland is what happens when you mix Robotron 2084 with a dash of Fallout, and then put the resulting mixture into the hands of a capable developer. The result is spectacular, and kudos to 10tons Ltd.

Waves of enemies swarm the player, and much like the arcade classic have a variety of abilities and behaviors the player must contend with. At your disposal is an arsenal of weapons with widely varying effects and abilities, as well as a level-up system that provides the player with perk choices that really enhance game play. All the while power ups and new weapons are dropping from dead enemies, there for the taking.

The weapons generally vary in terms of damage done, shot type (wide cones, smaller cones with higher bursts, area of effect damage, etc), rate of fire(machine guns shoot much quicker than shotguns), "bullet" velocity", damage, and special properties (ion blasts chain to other enemies in a small area of effect; the rain gun has infinite penetration).

The perks offer a wide range of abilities to compliment the weapons. Some of them boost player endurance or add extra damage. Others increase magazine size, rate of fire, or even shot speed. Others make the player more rugged, reducing the damage taken from attacks (And you will be taking damage) or making attacks miss altogether. Telekinesis allows the player to pick up power ups from across the screen by hovering the cursor over the item for a couple of seconds. Power ups include Nukes (large, very powerful, area of effect attack), freeze all (does just what it says - enjoy the free time and use it wisely!), chain-lightning like ion bolt, super-reflexes (the game slows down dramatically, but the player is affected noticeably less than the monsters), and even a healing power up.

There are plenty of boards to play as well as a survival mode. The missions provide difficulty levels and beating them all unlocks a hidden, harder, difficulty that changes the foes met on the mission.

The game isn't easy, and the biggest flaw is that there are a number of missions where one must get one of a small handful of guns early to survive the insane amount of enemies that start rapidly appearing (this is particularly true on some of the mission levels at the hidden difficulty). Also, perk choices come from a random list of 5 perks out of dozens; sometimes early level ups can make boards much easier thanks to getting stuff like Telekinesis, or the "ion boosting" set of perks early along with an ion machine gun, ion shotgun, or ion cannon drop. Also, every mission takes place in a wide open space, with the background terrain just looking different but having no meaningful effect on game play (there are a few missions where enemy color can blend in somewhat, making things harder on the player; monster-sight perk to the rescue!). Some welcome variety might have come from having randomly placed obstacles on levels, and having different terrain behave differently and significantly (snow slowing down many monsters and the player, for example).

Still, the flaws don't outweigh the positives by any stretch. The perk choices are clever and varied (even if some of them are far more useful than others). Survival mode can be a blast, even after the missions are exhausted on all difficulties. The shareware portion provides ample opportunity to get familiar with the game, and it's a small download. Try it!

It's very nice to see Crimsonland on here. ;-) I had loads of fun playing the demo a couple years back and never got around to buying the full version since I was without an internet connection for a year. Perhaps I can buy it through here eventually.. some of the most addicting gameplay I've seen.
